    • FRIELE DAPHNE MUNDINGER FRIELE (Age 82) Peacefully on April 16, 2008. Born in Funchal, Madeira, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick C. Walker. Predeceased by her loving husbands COL Robert G. Mundinger and Berent E. Friele. During WWII, Daphne was a member of the British FANY‘s and also served as the Jedburgh commanding officer's secretary. For recording their history and reuniting French, British and American Jedburgh teams, she was recognized as a member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire and received the French Ordre National du Merite. She later worked at the State Department and the American Embassy in Paris, France. Daphne was gracious to all and loved all creatures great and small. Daphne is survived by two devoted daughters and sons-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Gary Smith of Boca Raton, FL and Mr. and Mrs. James LaBrecque of Cheshire, CT. "Grannie Goose" is also survived by three loving grandchildren, Barbara Smith, Susan McConnell and Berent LaBrecque, and two great-grandchildren, Reilly and Tyler McConnell. Burial will take place at Arlington National Cemetery, at 3 p.m. Thursday, June 19, 2008.

      She was born in Funchal, Madeira, Portugal, and was preceded in death by her first husband, Col. Robert G. Mundinger, and second husband, Berent E. Friele in 1966. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Frederick C. Walker.

      During WW II, she was a member of the British FANY's (First Aid Nursing Yeomanry, British Women's Ambulance Unit formed in 1907). She was a member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, and was awarded the French Ordre National du Merite. She worked at the U.S. State Department, and the American Embassy in Paris, France.

      Survivors include two daughters and their spouses, Mr. & Mrs. Gary Smith of Florida and Mr. & Mrs. James LaBrecque of Connecticut; grandchildren, Barbara Smith, Susan McConnell, & Berent LaBrecque; great-grandchildren, Reilly & Tyler McConnell.

      Graveside services were conducted on Thursday, June 19, 2008.
