5373 | Obit Garrett Austin Spencer Garrett Austin Spencer, 19, passed away March 24, 2012 in Wolf Creek, CO due to a skiing accident. He was born on January 18, 1993 in Wichita, KS, the son of Gary S. and Susan R. Spencer. He was a 2011 graduate of Hesston High School where he was captain of the football team, and a member of the Future Business Leaders of America. He also enjoyed playing intramural sports. Garrett was an active member of God's Family, and a leader of the Hesston Youth Group where he touched many lives. A leader and a role model. That's how friends, coaches, and teachers described Garrett who died Saturday (3-24-2012) after crashing into a tree at Wolf Creek Ski Area in Colorado. People in Hesston describe him as a natural leader. "There have been so many stories of things he's done. It's stuff that happens along the way and you don't think twice about it. Now, you just reflect back and you think I knew Garrett was that kind of kid but it never registered with me," says Ty Rhodes, Spencer's former basketball coach at Hesston. Officials in Colorado say Spencer received almost immediate attention after hitting the tree. A skier passing by the scene happened to be a nurse, and tried to help. The ski patrol was alerted and arrived shortly after. He is survived by his parents Gary Spencer, and Susan Spencer both of Hesston, brothers Clayton and Landon Spencer of Hesston, paternal grandparents Ralph (Shirley) Spencer of McPherson, and maternal grandparents Earl (Carrol) Dalin of San Antonio, TX, and DeEtta Dalin of Wichita. He is preceded in death by his paternal great grandparents, Sadie Lornia Siemer Spencer Gilbert D. 5378 | Obitary Betty Selmer Jahns Mrs. Betty Selmer Jahns of Short Hills passed away at her home on Saturday, July 25, 2009, after a courageous fight with cancer. Betty has lived in Short Hills since 1966. She was born in Oslo, Norway, in 1936 to Evelyn Torklep and Arol Selmer. She came to the United States at the age of 13 with her mother and siblings and settled in Tacoma, Wash., where she attended both Washington State University and the University of Washington. While a stewardess with United Airlines in Chicago she met and married Wayne Jahns on Nov. 1, 1958. Betty had a fierce love for her family and friends and placed them above everything else in her life. She enjoyed assuming the role of the family matriarch gathering her loved ones to her home for holidays where she would elegantly mix modern customs with traditional food and decorations from her beloved Norway. She also loved to dance and it is widely acknowledged that Betty never heard a dance band she didn't like. After a successful career as a homemaker Betty took up real estate and enjoyed 20 years as a sales associate, first with Schlott Realtors and later with Coldwell Banker and most recently Burgdorff Realtors, where she received several awards for outstanding achievement. She was well known for treating her clients as friends and they often reciprocated by including Betty in holiday greetings and special event notifications like births and graduations even after their transactional relationship had concluded. Betty was a strong presence in the local community over the years with involvement in several organizations including The Henry Steifel Foundation (now The Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation); the Summit Business and Professional Women's Club, Inc., and as an active fundraiser for The Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn. She was also a longtime member of The Short Hills Club and Canoe Brook Country Club, where she enjoyed playing tennis, paddle and most recently golf. Betty is survived by her husband of 51 years, Wayne, and their three children, David Jahns and his wife, Karen, of New Canaan, Conn., Lisa Anderson and her husband, Sam, of New York City, and Daniel Jahns and his wife, Francesca, of New York City. She is also survived by her siblings, Signe Beale and Vivian Turner of Las Vegas, Nev., Robert Selmer of McKinney, Texas, and Rosie Johansson and Steve Selmer of Sweden. Betty also doted on her six grandchildren, Kevin, Andrew, Katie and Tommy Jahns and Dylan and Ashley Anderson. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 1, at 11 a.m. at Christ Church in Short Hills. A reception will immediately follow at The Short Hills Club. Arrangements by the William R. Dangler Funeral Home, Summit. Donations may be made in Betty's memory to The Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, a not-for-profit organization funding research to find a method of early detection and ultimately a cure for ovarian cancer, 14 Pennsylvania Plaza, Suite 1400, New York, N.Y. 10122 (www.ocrf.org) or The Carol G.
