5467 | Obituary for Harald “BUD” Friele Harald Berle “Bud” Friele passed away on November 21st, 2018 in the comfort of his own home on Salt Spring Island. Bud was born October 9, 1921 in Oslo, Norway, the eldest son of Haakon and Aslaug Friele, and brother to Ted and Rolf. He took great pride in his heritage, and always flew a Norwegian flag along with his Canadian flag. Bud lived his life with a strong sense of family, adventure, humour, creativity, and curiosity. Although he always kept Norway near and dear to his heart, Bud spent most of his younger years residing in the Seattle area. He proudly served in the US Navy during WWII as Captain of the USS Vent, patrolling the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. Bud was well known in the salmon industry, having fished and operated canneries in Alaska for many years. He later became President and General Manager of the Nakat Packing Corporation for A&P before retiring to Salt Spring Island. The sea was always a priority in Bud’s life. From his extensive career in the Alaskan salmon industry to spending time on his boat, “The Royal Viking,” Bud was happiest when out on the water. He could often be found prawning in the local waters, eating raw oysters off the beach, and making his specialty, Gravlax. Bud was also an avid skier, hiker, photographer, and gardener who recently returned home from the Fall Fair with a first place trophy for his grapes. He enjoyed spending time in his workshop, engineering new and ingenious ways to build or repair almost anything, and was known to be the best knife sharpener around. His most recent pastime found him creating perfectly balanced driftwood mobiles which he would give to grateful friends and family. Bud was deeply loved and cherished by his three devoted wives, Katherine Brazeau, Evelyn Mouat, and Patricia Dougan, all of whom predeceased him. He leaves behind his five daughters and two step daughters: Kathy Fontenot (Don), Barb Lorenson (Stan), Christy Lein (Gary), Shelley Maxwell (Ron), Kari Holmes (Rob), Aileen Dougan (Craig), and Leanne Stegall (Bill). He was also the treasured “Bestefar” to eleven grandchildren and “Oldefar” to eight great grandchildren. Additionally left behind are Bud’s younger brother Ted Friele (Patty), Bev Brazeau, and the Pringle and Mouat families. Bud’s longevity was due in part to his long time friend, David Davies, and to the wonderful care he received over the years from Dr. Reznick, Dr. Woodley, and the staff at Lady Minto Hospital. Bud wishes that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Lady Minto Hospital in Ganges. https://necrocanada.com/obituaries-2019/02/harald-bud-friele-october-9-1921-november-21-2018/ |

5475 | Obituary Jeffrey A Gomoll Jeffrey A. Gomoll, age 52, of Port Barrington, IL, and Tomahawk, WI, passed away on Saturday, May 8, 2021. Jeff was born in Elgin, IL, on December 29, 1968, to the late John R. and Dorothy F. (Arens) Gomoll. Jeff and his family lived in Elgin until he was 5 years old and then moved to Fox River Valley Gardens, IL. He was a 1987 graduate of Wauconda High School. After high school, he entered the workforce where his hard work ethic and love for his profession lead him to his accomplished career in the mortgage industry for over 30 years. Jeff [the man, the myth, the legend] was a devoted family man with a love for life and a friend to everyone he came across. He enjoyed boating and being out on the water, snowmobiling, and going to the shooting range and fishing with Ross. He had a magnetic personality and found people fascinating. He was the life and the loudest of the party. One of his favorite lines (and boy did he have many) was “Raise your hand if you’re having fun!”. His favorite place to be was in Tomahawk, WI, at the property that has been in his family for six generations. Above all, he was the sweetest “Bumpa” to his granddaughter, Brylee, who he truly adored and loved to show off. They were inseparable best friends who loved to have tea parties and walk to Hermann’s park. The love, light, and contagious energy he brought to every room will be sorely missed. Though his life was cut short, he genuinely lived the fullest life that his loved ones will continue to honor and celebrate. As he often said - I am here for a good time, not a long time. Survivors include his wife, Paula Gomoll; his daughters, Janeece, Hanna, and Hailee; his son, Jeffrey Ross; three brothers, John (Lisa) Gomoll, Ken (Peggy) Gomoll, and Mark (Ramona) Gomoll; and his sister, Wendy (William) Hoover. Jeff is further survived by his granddaughter, Brylee Anna Rose. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Dorothy Gomoll. Private family services for Jeffrey Gomoll will be held at a later date. Generations Funeral Home & Crematory is assisting the family. |

5479 | Obituary Samuel Robinson SUDDEN SUMMONS Samuel J Robinson Dies Suddenly at Home Friday Afternoon Four O'Clock The many friends of S. J. Robinson were startled last Friday morning as they were told that Mr. Robinson had taken seriously ill in the night and that it was not expected that he would live until sundown and this proved only too true, for at about four o'clock in the afternoon the spirit of Samuel J. Robinson had taken its flight. About one o'clock Friday, as near as Mrs. Robinson can remember, Mr. Robinson complained of a severe headache - he had been for four or five years subject to severe attacks of headache and usually got up, made strong coffee and drank it, or walked the floor until the headache eased up a little. Not much attention was paid to him by Mrs. Robinson until she heard him fall to the floor. She got up, helped him to the sofa and went for Dr. W. H. Monroe. The doctor realized that his patient was seriously ill and had Dr. L. B. LaCount called for consultation. The doctors diagnosed the case uremia, or acute Bright's disease, and that there was no possible hope of recovery, and that it was only a question of a few hours when the end would come. S. J. Robinson was born in New York state July 9, 1847. Mr. Robinson could remember his home, that it consisted of himself and one brother and father and mother. His father died and he was sent to an orphan home and never knew what became of his mother and brother. He was at the orphan home until he was seven years old. He was one of a whole carload of orphaned children who were shipped west. It fell to his lot to become a member of the family of Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Stephenson of Oshkosh, where he remained until he was thirteen years of age. He left his foster parents and for two years lived here and there among the farmers in the vicinity of Oshkosh, working in the fields in the summer and attending school in the winter time. From Oshkosh he went to Baraboo, where he worked in a chair factory for seven years making his home with Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Coon. He then came to Wausau and entered the employ of P. B. Champagne, who sent him up to Grandfather to run the station operated by the latter. In the summertime he worked at the painter's trade which he had learned in the chair factory. When P. B. Champagne became a resident of Merrill, Mr. Robinson also moved to Merrill. In 1884 he was elected clerk of the court, which office he acceptably filled for two years. Since then he has followed his occupation, that of painter and decorator. Mr. Robinson was married on Dec. 22, 1879, at Wausau, to Miss Cecila Selmer, who, with two children survive him. The children are Morgan, aged 16 years, and Olive, aged 2 years. He was a member of the West Merrill Lodge No. 49, I.O.O.F., Home Forum and Maccabees, the two latter in which his life was insured for $3,000: $1,000 in the Home Forum and $2,000 in the Maccabees. The funeral was held last Sunday and was under the auspices of West Merrill Lodge No. 49, I.O.O.F. and Markey Tent, No. 30, K.O.T.M., in full regalia. First came the Maccabees, the Jenny Lodge, followed by the West Merrill Lodge. After prayer at the house the body was conveyed to Scott Memorial church, where the services were conducted by M. J. Cook, Noble Grand. The scripture responses were read, and after prayer by Rev. Hughes, Rev. Clark delivered the funeral sermon, after which those present viewed the remains and passed out of the church, when the societies again formed in marching order. From the church the cortege moved to the cemetery, followed by a large line of people in carriages. At the grave the burial rites of Oddfellowship were carried out and the mortal remains of S. J. Robinson were laid to rest. The pall bearers were Frank Carheno, W. R. Hughes, Mr. A Christian, L. P. Boyer, Joseph Kubasta and Frank Bielny. Carl Hankwitz, Herman Zipp and Len Barber were members of the committee from West Merrill Lodge, No. 49, I.O.O.F., that had the immediate funeral arrangements in charge. H. W. Boyer, W. R. Hughes, and R. C. Wilson arranged the order of march. Some very beautiful floral offerings were made. Aug. Selmer, brother of Mrs. Robisnon and Fred Selmer, a nephew, of Iola, were those who attended from abroad.
