Obitary for Harold Sigurd Ulvestad

1992---DR. HAROLD ULVESTAD SR.; was ear, nose and throat specialist 
Dr. Harold S. Ulvestad Sr., 80, an ear, nose and throat specialist who practiced in Minneapolis from 1949 to 1982, died Thursday at Friendship Village in Bloomington.
Ulvestad, formerly of Edina and Minneapolis, was born in Fargo, N.D. His family was living in Spokane, Wash., when his father, a Lutheran minister, died when he was 7.
At that time the family moved to Northfield, Minn., because his mother felt strongly that her children should attend St. Olaf College, said Ulvestad's son, Dr. Rolf Ulvestad, of Shorewood. Ulvestad graduated from St. Olaf in 1936 and joined the Carnation Milk Co. in Northfield. He stayed for six years, but he wanted to go to medical school, his son said.
He graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School in about 1943 and did an internship at the old Ancker Hospital in St. Paul. He served in the Army Medical Corps from 1944 to 1946. He did orthopedic work in London and was sent to Berlin, where he worked in the ear, nose and throat specialty. When he returned to the University of Minnesota in June 1946 as an otolaryngology resident. In 1949, he joined Boies, Holmberg, Priest and Ulvestad in Minneapolis, now known as ENT Professional Associates Ltd.
He was the first chief of staff at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park. He was a clinical associate professor of otolaryngology at the University of Minnesota for many years and taught nasal surgery. He retired in 1982.
Besides his son Rolf, he is survived by his wife, Ingeborg; another son, Harold Jr., of Lake Bluff, Ill.; daughters Ann, of Minnetonka, and Laura of Boston; sisters Helen Ulvestad, of Edina, and Mildred Schwandt, of Edina, and eight grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 4800 France Av. S., Minneapolis. Memorial to the Alzheimer's Association are suggested. Arrangements are by Werness Brothers Funeral Chapel.

ULVESTAD
Harold S. Sr., M.D., 80, died July 23, 1992 at Friendship Village, Bloomington. Ear, nose, and throat specialist in Mpls, 1949 to 1962 with Boies, Holmberg, Priest and Ulvestad, now known as ENT Professional Associates, Ltd. He was on the staff of Methodist Hospital; elected the hospital's first Chief of Staff when the hospital relocated to St. Louis Park, Clinical Associate Professor of otolaryngology at the University of Minnesota Medical School, where he taught nasal surgery. Graduate of St. Olaf College and the University of Minnesota Medical School. Interned at Ancker Hospital, St. Paul, from 1943-1944; served from 1944-146 in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. Honorably discharged with the rank of Major, he then completed an otolaryngology fellowship at the University of MN Medical School. Survivors include his wife, Ingeborg; sons, Harold Jr. & Rolf; daughters, Ann & Laura, 8 grandchildren; sisters, Helen Ulvestad and Mildred Schwandt. Memorial service Monday, July 27, 5:30 pm, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 4800 France Ave S., Mpls. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Disease & Related Disorders, 8053 East Bloomington Freeway, Bloomington, MN. Werness Brothers Chapel, 3500 W. 50th St., 927-8641.
